Are Porcelain Veneers Permanent?

veneers San AntonioVeneers provide a wonderful treatment option for many different cosmetic oral concerns. Most veneers are permanent as they require a small amount of the dental enamel to be removed from the front of the teeth prior to application.

Veneers are ideal to disguise cosmetic issues such as chipped teeth, misshaped or uneven teeth, stained or discolored teeth or as a solution to unwanted gaps without having to undergo orthodontic treatment.

The veneers process is really quite simple. An initial consultation with your cosmetic dentist will identify which teeth are easily corrected, the advantages of veneers over any other treatment option, how many appointments will be needed, total investment and what you will need to do to keep your veneers healthy and looking their best.

Veneers can be used to treat one or multiple teeth. The process is one of the least invasive cosmetic enhancements available, does not require more than a local anesthetic and most cases can be completed in two visits following consultation.

During the first visit your cosmetic dentist may take photos and/or X-rays. Dental impressions are normally taken to assist the lab in fabricating your veneers. A small amount of dental enamel will be removed from the front of teeth to be treated about the thickness of the veneer itself. This will allow the veneer to fit in with surrounding teeth to appear natural. It is the removal of the enamel that requires the veneers to become permanent.

The veneers are “tried on” for fit and appearance. If needed, small adjustments can be made at that time. Once you and your dentist are satisfied with the result, the teeth are prepped with an acid etch to improve the ability for the veneers to adhere. Dental cement is used to permanently attach the veneers in place. A laser or curing light will help to complete treatment.

You have now achieved a smile makeover that will rival many other treatment options. Recommendations will be made on how to care for your porcelain veneers such as not biting into hard or chewy foods that might dislodge the porcelain shells covering the front of your teeth.

Since your veneers are made from porcelain, they are naturally stain resistant. You will brush and floss as usual and see your dentist every six months to maximize the longevity of your new porcelain veneers.
