What is the difference between veneers and Lumineers?

Lumineers San AntonioA smile makeover is often achieved through the use of very thin wafer shells that are cemented on the front of teeth requiring alteration. Both porcelain veneers and Lumineers provide this cosmetic capability. Our cosmetic dentist can consult with you and make recommendations based on your own individual concerns and needs.

The primary difference between Lumineers and porcelain veneers is one process is reversible and the other is permanent.

Veneers – When veneers are chosen, the process begins with the removal of a small amount of enamel from the front of teeth to be treated. The amount of enamel removed is about the thickness of the veneer itself – this allows treated teeth to remain symmetrically even with untreated teeth.

After enamel is removed, your cosmetic dentist will take impressions. The impressions will be sent to the dental lab for veneers to be made. In about two weeks, veneers will be tried in to guarantee a perfect fit and optimum appearance and functionality. Small modifications can be made chairside if needed, and then veneers will be permanently cemented to teeth.

Lumineers – Much like veneers, Lumineers are wafer thin shells that will be cemented to the front of teeth. The primary difference, however, is enamel is left intact so at any time the Lumineers can be removed. If Lumineers are desired over porcelain veneers, you will need to find a dentist that offers this procedure.

In addition to being able to reverse this treatment, the patient does not require temporaries or to be anesthetized at any time. The time needed to create Lumineers is about the same as the time required to fabricate porcelain veneers.

Both veneers and Lumineers are used to treat cosmetic issues such as chipped teeth, deeply stained teeth, uneven dentition, or unwanted gaps between teeth. Instead of capping teeth with crowns or investing years of time with orthodontic repair, the patient can enjoy a smile makeover that is completed in a matter of weeks.

Caring for your new cosmetic dental work is much like what you ordinarily do: brush twice daily with a fluoridated toothpaste, floss, and visit your dentist every six months for cleaning and exam. Care is needed to prevent breaking or dislodging shells as they require replacement if that should occur.
