Invisalign: Common questions and answers

Invisalign San AntonioIf you are considering orthodontics for yourself or for your teen, you may be wondering about the options that are currently available. Most patients are familiar with the traditional method of orthodontics, which utilizes a system of metal bands, wires, and brackets to straighten the teeth. Although this method has certainly proven to be successful, it has also proven to be challenging in terms of comfort, appearance, and maintenance. In 1997, the orthodontic system, Invisalign was developed to overcome some of these challenges. After almost two decades of clinical use, and more than 1 million patients treated, the Invisalign system has raised the standards for every patient’s orthodontic experience.

What is Invisalign? How does it work?

A series of custom-fitted clear retainers are created based on your dentist’s or Orthodontist’s orders. Following a very minimal preparation to your teeth, the trays apply gentle steady guidance to the teeth to realign your smile. Generally, a set of retainers will be worn for two weeks, and then replaced by the next set of retainers in the series. Treatment times and number of retainers will vary according to each patient’s needs.

What level of comfort does Invisalign provide?

Most patients can expect a high level of comfort during the Invisalign treatment process. In the office, there is minimal preparation to the teeth and no irritation to the gums, lips, or cheeks. Since the retainers are completely removable during meals, there is never an inconvenience regarding normal eating and drinking. You will never have to worry about food particles becoming lodged in or around the retainers.

How will the retainers look when I smile and speak?

Your retainers are custom fitted to the shape and contour of your teeth, with no interruption to your normal speech pattern. They have a thin, low- profile design which does not distort the shape of your lips or smile. The retainers are clear and barely noticeable during normal social interaction.

What type of maintenance is required during treatment?

Although you will return to the office for periodic evaluations, your main responsibility will be to wear your retainers as often as possible. The longer the retainers are in contact with your teeth, the more predictable your final results will be. The retainers should only be removed during meals. Brushing and flossing are recommended after every meal and prior to placing the retainers back into the mouth.
