Adjusting to Dentures: What should I expect during the first few weeks?

dentures San AntonioAny time you are fitted with a custom denture, it will feel different initially. There might be some discomfort, additional saliva might be produced, or you might be pleasantly surprised that your adjustments to your new dentures are somewhat limited.

A denture can be partial replacing a few teeth; or a complete denture is required when replacing an entire upper and/or lower arch of teeth.

A denture is removable, but during your initial adjustment period, your dentist may suggest you wear it 24/7 for a week or two.

Other situations you might face include:

Odd or “different” feeling – These aren’t your natural teeth, so it will take a little getting used to.

Minor irritation – During the adjustment period, you might have to return to the dentist for modifications to your denture. Irritations might occur, but should never be considered as “part of the process”. If it continues to rub, return to the dentist.

Eating – Your diet might need to consist of “soft” foods initially – eggs, yogurt, soup, pudding … you might introduce more challenging foods after the first few days.

Speaking – Additional saliva production and changes to your teeth might alter how you pronounce words and sounds. If this is a concern, practice by singing in the shower or conversing with yourself in the mirror to work out issues.

Within a brief period of time, you will be surprised how easily you are handling eating and speaking with your new denture. It should slip in easily, but feel secure.

Never attempt to “tweak” your denture on your own. A small adjustment could result in irreparable damage. Return to your dentist for any adjustments – initial adjustments are expected.

Caring for your denture and your remaining natural teeth is not difficult … you should never brush your teeth with your denture in place. Gently brush gum tissue and remaining natural teeth with a fluoridated tooth paste and soft bristle tooth brush.

Your denture itself can be cleaned with cleaners and brushes designed specifically for dentures – clean them carefully taking care not to drop as they can break.

Following your dentist’s instructions will allow you to enjoy years of eating, speaking, and smiling with self-confidence.
